Okay, so I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen again, and this time I wanted to try something totally new. I’ve always loved the idea of comfort food that’s also a little bit exotic, and I think I’ve finally found the perfect balance. These baked spiced Greek meatballs, or Soutzoukakia, are seriously amazing. The aroma alone while they were baking had my stomach rumbling like crazy! The combination of the spices with the rich tomato sauce…oh man, just thinking about it makes me want to whip up another batch!

Seriously, these are incredible. I wanted to share this gem, because it just might become your new family favorite!

Baked Spiced Greek Meatballs in Tomato Sauce-SoutzoukakiaIngredients:

  • For the Meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef (or lamb, or a mix!)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional, but highly recommended!)

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (to balance the acidity)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, oregano, cumin, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix well with your hands until everything is evenly combined. Don’t overmix, though, or the meatballs will be tough.
  2. Shape the Meatballs: Roll the mixture into oval-shaped meatballs, about 2 inches long.
  3. Brown the Meatballs: Heat the 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides. You don’t need to cook them all the way through at this point, just get a nice sear on them. This step adds a ton of flavor! Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Make the Tomato Sauce: In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sauté the chopped onion until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Simmer the Sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and red wine (if using). Stir in the tomato paste, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  6. Bake the Meatballs: Gently place the browned meatballs into the simmering tomato sauce. Make sure the meatballs are mostly covered by the sauce. Transfer the skillet (or transfer the sauce and meatballs to a baking dish if your skillet isn’t oven-safe) to a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C).
  7. Bake: Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
  8. Serve: Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve hot. These are fantastic with rice, pasta, or even crusty bread for soaking up that delicious sauce.

I really hope you try these! They are a taste of the Mediterranean right in your own kitchen. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
